The Money for Nothing Ban: Let’s Talk Facts, Not Fiction

featured

As you may be aware this past week a number of news outlets in Canada and the United States began reporting that Dire Strait’s classic Money for Nothing had been banned from the airwaves. While this is sort of what happened, it fails to capture the subtle nuances of the matter and completely misses out on several key truths. In the interest of calming a few fires and hopefully stoking a few others I thought it’d be a good idea to look at what’s been said and correct the misinformation. Read more »

PC Review: Cogs

Featured

Before we start talking about Cogs I want to make one thing perfectly clear; I fucking hate slider puzzles. They are the single most annoying mental problem I am forced to endure on a regular basis and given the option I’d rather be violated with a piece of rough timber than waste my time trying to solve one. So imagine my surprise when I discovered I’d somehow purchased a game containing nothing else. Worse still, due to my rampant spending spree over the holidays I’d made a vow to not play anything new until I cleared my backlog and was therefore forced to play it. With a heavy heart I sat down, opened Cogs and prepared for the worst. But then something crazy happened. I started to have fun. Read more »

PC Review: Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight

featured

Around a decade ago Electronic Arts, under the leadership of Larry Probst, began a campaign that can only be described as the systematic acquisition, rape and decimation of the industry’s best independent studios and franchises. Though many great series were lost during this creative massacre, by far the biggest casualty was Westwood Studios’ Command & Conquer franchise, that was put on hiatus following the release of C&C: Generals in 2003. It wasn’t until four years later, under the new leadership of John Riccitiello, that the series was finally brought out of retirement and given one last shot at greatness. At first things seemed to be going well with the well-received releases of C&C 3:Tiberium Wars and Red Alert 3, but then someone decided to make C&C 4, a game so mind-bogglingly wrong that it’s effectively killed the series. The Best I Watched/Played/Read in 2010

Featured

It’s sort of a tradition on the interwebs for pretentious bloggers of little or no renown to give out imaginary awards for the Best X of XX. Not one to miss out on the fad I thought I’d get in on this myself, but because I live in the real world I’m not going to call these awards. Let’s be honest, how many bloggers actual watch enough movies, play enough games, listen to enough music or read enough books to truly be an authority on the subject of what’s better than the rest? Probably not too many. Recognizing this fact I’m instead going to tell you about the media I was fortunate enough to experience in 2010. I’m not saying this is the best there was, just the best of what I watched/played/read. Read more »

Film Review: Tron Legacy

featured

Easily the most anticipated film of the holiday season, Tron Legacy found itself with big shoes to fill. Not only did it have the live up to an insurmountable amount of hype, but it also had to justify its existence following a long, 28-year hiatus. Fortunately the film doesn’t disappoint and while it may not be what everyone was expecting, it’s strong enough to stand on it’s own. Read more »

Xbox 360 Import Review: DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu Ver 1.5 – Arrange B Mode

featured

DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu‘s Arrange B is by far the single most confusing arrange mode ever conceived. Levels are played individually, rather than consecutively; rank carriers over between playthroughs and there are numbers and gauges everywhere. It’s like a form of controlled madness and in many ways that’s what makes it fun. Read more »
